Can this really fight climate change?
Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing at an alarming rate, and the world can no longer naturally regulate the high temperatures. Through the carbon offset projects carbon is displaced, removed or sequestered which results in a reduction of carbon in the atmosphere, bringing it closer to a level where it’s possible for the earth to naturally regulate. And, global warming is one of the biggest contributors to climate change so, yes it definitely can.
What does carbon neutral and climate positive mean?
The concept of carbon neutral has been around for a while. Carbon neutrality is achieved when you purchase enough carbon offsets in order to remove as much carbon from the air as your everyday activities emit. By purchasing carbon credits that fund projects that displace or sequester carbon, you balance the emissions that you’ve caused and reach neutral, zero. When you’re climate positive, you’re going above and beyond that.Through planting trees you sequester more carbon than your activities emit, bringing you to that sweet spot beyond neutral, to positive. How do I know I’m really making an impact?
Our platform provides you with as much transparent information as possible including a carbon registry to ensure that your credits are legit, updates on the projects that you’re supporting, and an overview of the value that is created in communities when even just 1 ton of co2 is offset. Does carbon offsetting have additional benefits?
There are many co-benefits that are associated with carbon offsetting. In addition to reducing and sequestering carbon emissions there are big benefits to the communities where the projects take place. Benefits such as creating jobs, improving environmental conditions and easing the strain on local healthcare facilities (by reducing environmental based illnesses), and creating sustainable infrastructure to support economic development. All of the projects that are in our portfolio are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and work towards reducing poverty and creating better, greener communities.
How did you calculate my footprint?
We use the most up-to-date data that’s available to determine the average carbon emissions per person based on their country of residence for over 200 countries around the world. With this information we can then determine the amount that is needed to offset per month, per person, based on where they’re living. This data includes a range of factors like fuel combustion, cement manufacturing and agriculture in addition to the variables that include the regional power grids, lifestyle habits and cultural norms.
What are different types of carbon offset projects?
There are a variety of carbon offsetting projects that take place all over the world. The three types of projects that we work with specifically are renewable energy, reforestation, community and water projects. Although we work with these projects specifically, there are a variety of other projects that are undertaken to reduce and sequester carbon
Are these carbon offset projects regulated in any way?
The projects that we work with are rigorously verified by third party verifiers and external auditors to ensure that they are held to the highest compliance standards and are working, and functioning, to follow through on the promised benefits to communities and the environment - Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard, Global Climate Action & CDM Verified projects are the only one we deal with!
How do you select the carbon offset projects?
We select projects based on who they’re verified by, their locations and the scope of the projects/promised benefits. Using this criteria we’re able to offer a comprehensive portfolio of projects to ensure we’re making the most impact in the most communities.
Why renewable energy projects?
Renewable energy projects are a great carbon offsetting option to ensure lasting impact and contribute to greener communities. When you invest in renewable energy projects you provide a source of energy, that uses renewable resources that can then contribute to the local power grids. Once these sources have been put in place, they permanently displace the need to use fossil fuel generated electricity. This results in a big reduction of carbon emissions for the businesses and individuals who are on these power grids.
What does planting a tree even accomplish?
Trees are a natural carbon sink, meaning that they pull carbon emissions from the air. This makes for a pretty simple way to reduce carbon emissions. The more trees, the more carbon that’s pulled from the air. But, it’s important to note that trees only start to sequester carbon once they’ve matured. So in theory, the trees need to get to a certain age in order to reap the benefits of their carbon pulling abilities. Funding security for the forests that are planted, to ensure that they have the best chance of growing, thriving and maturing to the point where they can sequester carbon.
How does planting a tree make me climate positive?
In our case, planting trees is how we take the next step and make you climate positive. But it’s not the tree specifically that is making you climate positive. Being climate positive means you’re offsetting more emissions that you’re emitting. So whether you’re planting trees, or buying more carbon credits, if you’re offsetting beyond your emissions you’re climate positive! We choose to plant trees to take you to the next level because of the way we’ve distributed the other offset projects that you’re contributing to. This ensures that you’re contributing to a variety of projects and creating a balanced and sustainable impact in communities around the world.
How do you ensure that my footprint is actually offset?
Now that we’ve calculated your average footprint using your location data, we buy the carbon credits. We have a transparent carbon accounting system that allows us to track the issuances and retirals of the carbon credits that we’re purchasing. When a credit is retired, we retire it in our own carbon registry so that you can be sure none of our credits are ever double counted. We buy credits from globally recognized third party verifies with their own independent registries, so that we can ensure no credits have been double counted and can track their issuances and retirals.
How can I track my impact?
We at TNP Will create individual customised dashboards for businesses & institutions for fee to track impact in real time. If you are an individual you can request a customised report from us as well. For individuals, we are working on an app to automate this process for you.
